Closing the Impact - Intent Gap

  • Typically a 1-1/2 day workshop.

  • Classroom learning with a balanced cohort.

  • All experience levels welcome.

People from traditionally dominant identity groups are often well-intended while the impact of their words and actions upon those around them perpetuates an environment of marginalization. The path toward minimizing unintended marginalization and discrimination is based on creating an open feedback loop between individuals across social identity groups. Workshop participants will be introduced to the levels of individual, group, and system, and create their own roadmap toward developing awareness of own prejudices and assumptions.

Learning Objectives

  • Explore social identity groups and systems of privilege that lead to marginalization.

  • Collaborate on a roadmap for moving toward a more inclusive environment.

  • Provide participants with tools leveraging their “use-of-self” for creating positive change.

Marginalization Recognization

  • Typically a 4, 6, or 8 hour workshop.

  • Classroom learning.

  • All experience levels welcome.

A defining characteristic of dominance is the inability to see advantages based on social-identity group membership. This workshop helps participants recognize individually dominant spaces and subsequent impacts. Taking criticism and responsibility for the impact upon others without judgement will be practiced throughout the day.

Learning Objectives

  • Explore social identity groups and systems of privilege that lead to marginalization.

  • Provide participants tools for soliciting marginalized experiences and perspectives.

  • Understanding how to leverage equity to everyone's benefit.

Mastering Initial Participation

  • Typically a 6 or 8 hour workshop.

  • Classroom learning.

  • All experience levels welcome.

People decide whether to become or remain an employee, customer, or group member based on their Initial Participation (IP) value. This workshop dives into the details of the four IP constructs, how they interact with each other, and how attrition caused by social identities can be mitigated. Participants will work collaboratively or individually to make real-life space(s) more inclusive and welcoming.

Learning Objectives

  • Comprehensive understanding the Initial Participation Model and how its constructs impact retention.

  • Mapping the roots of attrition and identifying corresponding interventions.

  • Develop an executable plan for making a real-world space more inclusive.

Notes about Workshops

The ability for participants to evolve and grow in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion over a single educational moment is limited. Rather than expecting behaviors to change instantly, our workshops set participants up to grow from future experiences and evolving mindsets. Our sessions are designed to ensure all participants move forward in some way—regardless of their starting point. Our workshops also aim to be fun and amazing experiences for each participant.
